eBooks are different |
| Why eBooks?
Books, since before Gutenberg and the invention of the moveable type, have been treasured as stores of knowledge. Much has been lost with the physical destruction of books and papers; deliberately, or by the ravages of time, mould, insects and indifference. We still love books and the world still publishes more books each year than have been published before. We will continue to buy them. Now, however, we have new technologies and new possibilities for books. An eBook can be made with a variety of the latest computing technology. At the least an eBook can be plain text. Spoken books are also a possibility. More complex books can use text, colour photographs and pictures, animation, film and sound: all created as an electronic item and readable on a PC or other electronic screen. The benefits of eBooks are many: They can be read, purchased and delivered over the net - the telecomms system. Back issues can be supplied at any time, identical to the original. They can be revised, brought up to date and errata, if any, eliminated. They are ecologically friendly; no trees needed, little energy is used, no carbon dioxide released, no second-hand items to dispose of and any media equipment used is constantly becoming smaller. The costs of eBooks are reducing, in the way computers are becoming cheaper. eBooks are: versatile; require an increasingly small space for storage; convenient to move from place to place and a very flexible reading medium at any convenient location. Our books are meant to combine text with much more pictorial material than is normally found in standard books, but any standard format is possible depending on the subject matter. eBooks are the technology for this new century and for the future.
